"The fertility of Doubt and Lessons from JUnk DNA."
The YRT Team announces the first Fall Faculty Roundtable at Yale to be held the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017. The topic will be presented by Fred Sigworth and John Seel. They will provide context for the faculty participants to consider some of the lessons that can be learned from one example of researchers who doubted received wisdom and suggested new approaches to DNA theory.
Fred Sigworth studied applied physics at Caltech and was a graduate student at Yale, working in the neuroscience laboratory of Charles F. Stevens. He received the PhD in physiology from Yale in 1979 and was a postdoc in the laboratory of Erwin Neher in Göttingen, Germany where he was a co-developer of patch-clamp techniques for single-channel electrophysiology. He returned to Yale as a faculty member at Yale in 1984. His current research is in the structural biology of ion-channel proteins, making use of novel cryo-EM methods. Fred is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (2016); winner of: the Bohmfalk Teaching Prize of the Yale School of Medicine (2002), the K.C. Cole Award of the Biophysical Society (1997), the Yale Science and Engineering Award (1996), the NIH Jacob Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award (1992) and a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1979).
John Seel is a senior fellow at Cardus and former director of cultural engagement at the John Templeton Foundation. He is currently principal at John Seel Consulting LLC, a cultural impact consulting firm specializing on millennials.
Seel is a cultural renewal entrepreneur -- putting legs on visions that foster human flourishing and the common good. John's career combines business, education, theology, and cultural sociology. He was actively involved in founding The Williamsburg Charter, The Trinity Forum, the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia, The Cambridge School of Dallas, and the Council on Educational Standards & Accountability. He is a fellow of cultural engagement at the Windrider Institute at the Sundance Film Festival and is a senior advisor to the Wedgwood Circle, an angel investment firm investing in art and entertainment.
John has a B.A. in history, business, and philosophy from Austin College; an M.Div. from Covenant Theological Seminary; and a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland at College Park.
